Care home activities

Providing meaningful activities for our elderly residents

Our residents’ ongoing health and wellbeing is extremely important to us and we recognise that keeping active, both mentally and physically, whilst maintaining a sense of purpose and meaning are key to individuals’ happiness, contentment and joy.

In partnership with our residents and those closest to them, our dedicated lifestyle team, working across all of our home’s communities, develops a varied programme of meaningful activities, events and celebrations which are personalised to individuals’ likes, dislikes, abilities and care needs as well as aspirations and dreams for the future.

Our whole team supports our residents to rekindle interests and hobbies, whilst also gently encouraging them to try new things they might enjoy, either as part of a group of friends, on a 1-2-1 basis and in their own room, if they prefer.

Maintaining an active body and mind

We are passionate about enabling residents to live their very best lives, filled with love and happiness. Their ongoing health and wellbeing is extremely important to us and regular opportunities to exercise bring fun and laughter. Through our unique exercise programme we support residents to keep active and well for as long as possible. For some, that may be through seated exercises from the comfort of their own chair whilst, for others, it could be a tai chi class, full exercise class or even a spot of gardening.

To keep our minds and bodies active we have a dedicated lifestyle team who foster a lively environment within our home.  Activities vary from arts and crafts, to music, fitness, gardening and much more. They include intergenerational sessions with young children from our local early years centre, through to exciting day trips around Cambridgeshire and further afield. We also regularly host fetes and markets in our Bramley Village with stalls from our partners in the local community, including the arts, leisure and education sectors.

Our residents also have full membership to the local Girton Golf Club and leisure centre which features a swimming pool.

Food for the soul

Our ground-floor dining area and village café is a centre of activity where residents and their families and friends can sit and enjoy each other’s company, chatting over a cuppa and a selection of homemade sandwiches and delicious cakes – all lovingly handmade by our talented in-house catering team. There are also some sweet treats available in our village shop for those who want to indulge.

For those of us who relish the quiet times we have a variety of cosy corners and comfy quiet areas to sit and watch the world go by, enjoy a challenging game of chess, delve into a novel, read the paper or work on a knitting or needlework project. Residents can relax on Bramley Court’s sandy beach, orchard, or sensory garden.

A life full of meaning and purpose

Our residents’ are amazing and their talents never cease to amaze us!

Alongside our organised activities, we also provide a variety of opportunities to bring meaning to people’s lives, whilst nurturing their existing talents and experience and learning from others along the way.

Whether it’s a resident with a particular flair for art, baking, dancing, music, homemaking or DIY, we all enjoy learning from each other and sharing our knowledge.

Animals play an important role within our home and our gentle dog Pip loves spending time with our residents and welcoming visitors. Whether it be a walk in the gardens, a bit of fuss or curling up nearby, he’s a key member of our team!

Our Wishing Tree initiative strives to make dreams come true, whether that’s enabling a resident to re-visit their beloved home football team after many years’ absence or ride on a motorbike again, as they did in their youth, we love the challenge of making wishes come true.

At the heart of our local community

We recognise, for many of our residents, remaining an active and valued part of their local community is very important to them so we regularly invite groups such as the arts, musicians and churches into the home to spend time with us.

Our local community are also welcome to come and take part in celebrations, meal times and themed events as well as a variety of activities.

Our intergenerational sessions with young children from Histon’s Early Years Centre has been a huge hit with everyone. Little Bramley’s group visits regularly for fun and laughter creating a wonderful atmosphere, bringing smiles and a chance for our residents to spend time with them, prompting cherished memories of raising their own children. It also provides a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn from our residents, partake in interactive play, read books, enjoy a train ride in our dementia community and have a chat over breakfast.

Getting out and about into the community, as well as further afield, is also a highlight of ours as we take in trips in our minibus to a variety of attractions such as garden centres, pubs for lunch, city museums, Girton Golf Club, local places of interest and even on holiday!

Our partnership with The Fitzwilliam Museum is a particular favourite for many of our artistic residents. Not only do we get to try our hand at recreating masterpieces and learning about them in the home, we also get to then admire them in real life during our guided visits to the museum.
